Willis V. Carpenter practices law full time, teaches a ten-week course in real estate practice every fall to a new crop of real estate attorneys, and delivers many other continuing legal education (CLE) lectures during the year on a variety of topics. [View Publications]
Will was admitted to the bar in Colorado in 1954. His formal education was at Princeton University, A.B., cum laude, 1951; and Harvard Law School, LL.B, 1954. He was on active and reserve duty in the United States Naval Reserve, Naval Intelligence, 1954-1977, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Will’s practice is focused on real estate and commercial transactions, farm and ranch sales, conservation easements, and title insurance issues. Will also devotes a substantial amount of time to expert witness testimony; he has testified in more than 75 trials and arbitrations since 1977, in 17 Colorado District Courts and the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.

Will is a perpetual instructor, both informally on the telephone with Colorado lawyers and students, and in structured educational settings, including:

- Colorado Bar Refresher, Property Law, 1972-1981
- Colorado Real Estate Practice, 1977-present, CLE in Colorado, Inc.
Will participates widely in bar activities, as a member of the Denver Bar Association, where he served as president, 1978-1979, and received the annual Award of Merit in 1993; and the Colorado Bar Association, from which he received the annual Award of Merit in 2004, and for which he served on the Board of Governors, 1975-1980. He was Chairman of the Real Estate Law Section, 1976-1977, and received its first Real Estate Hall of Fame award in 2004. Other awards include the Richard N. Doyle CLE Award of Excellence, 2002, and the Deserving [Real Estate Law] Section Member Award, 1986.
He is a member of the American Bar Association; the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, in which he was a Charter Member; and the Colorado Bar Foundation, in which he was a Charter Member, serving on the Board of Trustees, 1985-1991, and as Chairman 1989-1991.
Will has been a shareholder of Attorneys Title Guaranty Fund, Inc., since 1968, is a licensed title insurance agent in Colorado, and was a Vice President and member of the Board of Directors, 1976 to 1997.
Will is also Of Counsel to the law firm of Coan, Payton & Payne, LLC and currently works out of the firm's Denver, Colorado office.
